What are projects?

The individual project groups that members sign up for are much smaller. These project groups are led by volunteer leaders willing to teach their knowledge or talent to those interested. Some meetings occur monthly, and some run on other schedules, depending on the group. This is where hands-on learning takes place. The type of project determines when and how long the project meetings take place. For example, cooking and sewing may take place during the winter months, a wreath-making class may take place before the holidays, and gardening may take place in the spring and summer.

Generally, the animal projects begin mid- to late-spring after the babies are born and continue through the summer until the August fair. If a 4-H member does not own his or her animal, there are sometimes animals available for lease for a small fee (determined by the animal owner). After 4-H sign-up night, individuals will be assigned to particular project groups. The adult project leader will contact 4-H’ers to advise them of meeting dates and times.

Some projects will have county-level events at various times of the year. For example, each spring, a Fashion Review is presented where sewing projects are displayed and judged as well as a Food Show for the cooking groups. If you have participated in one of these special projects, these events are your time to shine and show off your skills.
